The guideline per household should be a budget of $20-25 per person for the week. Example: A household of four= $80-100/week. You might be thinking, "That's unrealistic". Try these four tips and you will notice a drastic difference in your grocery shopping bill. Budgeting and saving money is all about changing your mindset.

  1. Shop the perimeters of the grocery store. Have you ever noticed that produce, dairy and meat are usually located on the outer perimeters of the grocery store? The processed, canned and pre-packaged products are usually located in the center. Steer clear of these items. They are higher in price and not all that great for your health. You will not only save yourself some money, but you will also have a healthier diet.

  2. Only shop for one weeks worth of groceries. When you shop for any more than this amount, your basically asking to throw away food that has gone bad. Every time you throw away that soggy asparagus that you never got around to eating, think of it as dollar bills you are literally throwing in the garbage. Would you throw away dollar bills? Of course not. That would be ridiculous. Would you throw away food? It represents the same thing.

  3. Do not grocery shop until your fridge and cabinets are empty. Again, this prevents wasting food and money. That last shopping trip should have only lasted you the week. By the time Saturday comes around to visit the grocery store again, your kitchen should be empty. If it's not, you are still buying too much food and can probably cut back a little more and save more money.

  4. Get rid of the extra freezer- Shopping once a week will make an extra freezer useless. You don't need it. How much money do you think you can get for selling that hefty item? Pay off some debt with that money, say good-bye to freezer burn and clear up some free space in your house. Remember, your children's college fund or that vacation you can never afford to go on is sitting right under your nose. It's hiding in your garage, storage unit, closet or grocery budget.
